title = "Early oxidation behavior of Ti50Al and Ti45Al8Nb alloys",
abstract = "The early oxidation behaviors of Ti50Al and Ti45Al8Nb (at.\%) oxidized at 900°C in air were investigated. The surface morphologies of oxide films and fractured sections were observed by SEM analysis. Oxide layers formed for different oxidation times were investigated by using XPS. In addition, changes of the layer composition in dependence on depth were analyzed by using AES. Experimental results revealed that oxidation resistance of Ti45A18Nb was remarkably promoted by Nb addition. The oxidation of γ-TiAl based alloys during experiments can be schematically divided into two stages: (I) - selective growth of alumina-rich scale, (II) - simultaneous oxidation of titanium and aluminum. Nb addition on Ti45Al8Nb alloy did not change the two stages oxidation mechanism, but it delayed the transition from stage I into stage II. It made oxide scale finer grained and denser. It also impeded the inward diffusion of oxygen and the outward diffusion of metallic elements that improved oxidation resistance in kinetics.",
