Durability study of CFRP Pultruded plates subjected to water immersion

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingConference contributionpeer-review

Abstract

Pultruded carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) plates have been widely used for structural strengthening and rehabilitation due to their excellent mechanical properties. In the present study, the effects of water immersion on the mechanical properties of the resin matrix, interfaces between the fiber and resin matrix, and the CFRP plates were investigated, systematically. The resin matrix shows stability in the mechanical properties after prolonged immersion. On the contrary, the interfacial properties between the fibers and resin matrix are very susceptible to the water immersion, which indicates that the interfacial property of the fiber and resin play a key role on the long-term durability of CFRPs. As regards to the CFRP plates, the tensile strength is slightly deteriorated due to prolonged immersion, while the modulus is negligible affected. This is ascribed to the fact that the tensile properties of the CFRP plate are mainly dependent on the fibers.
