Abstract
Laser brazing between commercially Mg alloy(AZ31) and Al alloy has been carried out in the Mg-based and Al-based insert metals. The brazement has been evaluated using optical microscopy, micro vickers hardness electron probe microanalysis(EPMA) and tensile shear testing. Optical microscopy shows that different intermediate layers are formed in the reaction zone, and these layers change with the kind of insert metal. EPMA revealed that, at any particular insert metal, MgAl-rich phase formed in the cell boundary of the Mg alloy side.
