Abstract

Solar cool coatings, also known as “cool roofs” or “cool coatings,” are designed to reflect more sunlight and absorb less heat than traditional roofing materials. By reducing heat absorption, these coatings lower cooling costs for buildings and contribute directly to achieving Net Zero goals. By incorporating advanced materials such as reflective pigments, infrared-emitting compounds, and nanotechnology, solar cool coatings enhance durability and performance across various climates. Their application on roofs, walls, and other surfaces not only contributes to energy savings but also aligns with global sustainability goals by reducing greenhouse gas emissions. This review explores the key characteristics, benefits and extant applications of solar cool coatings. The development and application of these coatings offers great potential for improving energy efficiency, cutting cooling costs, alleviating urban heat island effects and decreasing energy demand during extreme weather conditions, thus paving the way for a more sustainable lifestyle. Furthermore, the paper explores the new opportunities emerging from these advancements concerning energy conservation and environmental sustainability. It highlights the transformative impact of these coatings in mitigating climate change and promoting resilient construction practices.
