Design and thermodynamics of in-situ formed SiC-BN ceramic matrix composites

Research output: Contribution to journalArticlepeer-review

Abstract

A novel ceramic matrix composites (CMCs): SiC-BN has been formulated and fabricated via in-situ synthetic reaction. Some of equations whose reaction products are SiC and BN have been calculated by, thermodynamics, and the equation Si3N4 + B4C + 2C = 3SiC+ 4BN has been selected to fabricate SiC-BN CMCs, due to its easily being activated and not being affected by the subsidiary reactions through using appropriate sintering technics. Experimental results show that the reaction can finish before 1700°C and the final reaction product are β-SiC and h-BN as anticipated.
