Abstract

An improved left-handed metamaterial (LHM) in X band is designed with broad bandwidth and small structure through improving the LHM constructed from the SRRs and wires. By optimization design, the bandwidth is up to 2.6 GHz. The backward wave (BW) feature and the negative index of refraction (NIR) feature of the LHM are investigated using numerical simulation methods. The results show that the obvious BW and NIR phenomenon are simultaneously exhibited, thus the existence of the LHM is demonstrated. These results can be used to advance the modern space communication technology based on RF components with good performance dependent on LHM.
