Design and Analysis of a Transverse-Flux Flux-Reversal Linear Machine

Research output: Contribution to journalArticlepeer-review

Abstract

A transverse-flux flux-reversal linear machine was proposed, which had the advantages of compact structure and easy manufacturing over conventional transverse flux linear machines. The permanent magnets were mounted on the primary teeth, And the secondary was only consisted of iron cores, which were easy for processing and installation, making it suitable for long stroke applications considering the low cost of secondary. Firstly, the basic structure and operating principle were presented. Secondly, the expressions of electromagnetic thrust and thrust density were induced by taking the magnets as magnetization currents and the modulation of armature field. Thirdly, the 3D finite element method was employed to optimize the geometry sizes of the machine. Finally, a prototype machine was built and experiments of back-EMF and static thrust were conducted. The results show good agreement with theoretical analysis.
