Degradation characteristics of phenol-degrading bacteria used for gasification wastewater advanced treatment

Abstract

Two phenol-degrading bacteria were isolated from activated sludge in biological treatment system of Harbin Gasification Factory. Physiological and biochemical tests and 16SrDNA sequencing revealed that two bacteria belong to Bacillus and Pseudomonas respectively. Effects of temperature and pH on the phenol degrading capacity of single bacterium and mixed bacteria were studied: zoogloea forming capacity of two kinds of bacteria were investigated. Compared with single bacterium, mixed bacteria have better phenol degrading capacity and zoogloea forming capacity. Mixed bacteria are more suitable for bio-augmentation than single bacterium. IBAC has been developed on the granular activated carbon by immobilization of selected and acclimated species of the mixed bacteria to treat the gasification wastewater. The removal efficiencies of COD and total phenol were over 80% and 70% respectively.
