Abstract

To satisfy high speed and high precision Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machining of parts with complex surfaces, a curve-interpolation method for 5-axis CNC machine tools was proposed. CNC controller with the interpolation function classified controlling tasks into two parts: non-real time jobs and real-time jobs. Non-real time jobs were composed of interpolations of position vectors curves and orientation unit vectors curves forming multi-axis tool paths. Real-time interpolation of position vectors curves and orientation unit vectors curves and inverse kinematics were the real-time tasks. Application of the proposed method revealed that the above-mentioned control strategy could be used for motion control of 5-axis CNC machine tools with better application prospects.
