Abstract
This paper presents a cooperative control framework of the wind energy conversion system (WECS) and the compressed air energy storage (CAES). The proposed framework is mainly based on the coordination between the two units to improve the overall frequency response and mitigate the impacts of wind power uncertainty. Besides, the presented coordination aims to resolve the contradiction issue between the speed recovery system and the frequency regulation signal in the WECS. Accordingly, the CAES is involved in the frequency regulation under simultaneous charging and discharging mode to act as a complement unit of the WECS which assist to take the benefits of WECS fast inertia support and recompense the WECS limitations from obeying the load demand. The effectiveness of the proposed coordination has been examined under different scenarios and load profiles by using MATLAB/SIMULINK simulation. The results have confirmed the ability of the proposed coordination to improve the system frequency response compared to the uncoordinated control operations. Furthermore, the proposed control is able to limit effectively the impacts of the load and wind power fluctuations in the system frequency.
