Abstract

The calculation methods of concrete-filled rectangular hollow section (RHS) steel tubes subjected axial load in different codes are introduced, which includes American Load and Resistance Factor Design specification for structural building (LRFD), European Committee for Standardization Eurocode 4, Architectural Institute of Japan (AIJ), Chinese design code CECS 159:2004 and Fujian design code (DBJ13-51-2003). The calculated results from the above five design codes are compared with experimental results. The results showed that EC4 and Fujian design code closely predict the ultimate capacity of the specimens, and the other three codes are slightly more conservative. At the same time, a simplified method is given to calculate the bearing capacity. The local buckling of specimen with large width-to-thickness ratio is considered. The accuracy of the proposed simplified method is assessed by comparing the experimental results from different references.
