Abstract

This paper presents the comparison details of the five-phase and three-phase permanent-magnet synchronous machines (PMSMs) which use identical silicon steel laminations for the stators. To utilize the identical stator laminations for both the five-phase and three-phase PMSMs, the feasible slot/pole combinations for these two kinds of machines are studied. A five-phase fault-tolerant PMSM is firstly developed for electric vehicles (EVs). Based on this five-phase machine, six three-phase PMSM schemes are further designed against the same limitations as those of the five-phase PMSM. Further, the five-phase and three-phase PMSMs are compared from the aspects of armature air-gap flux density, no-load performance, load performance and fault-tolerant capability. This s can provide guidance for the candidate selection of the driving machines which are used for EVs.
