Abstract

In this paper, the comparative studies of each loss distribution in permanent magnet vernier machines (PMVMs) and fractional-slot permanent magnet synchronous machines (PMSMs) are carried out. Firstly, the core loss and PM loss are calculated and compared by the theoretical and finite-element analysis (FEA) methods. The contribution of each harmonic on the core loss and PM loss is targeted and extracted, where the sub-harmonics and slot-harmonics are highlighted, respectively. Secondly, the influence of stator tooth, flux barrier topologies, and PWM control strategies on the losses are investigated. The losses of PMVM and benchmark PMSM under various torque and speed is calculated and exhibited, where the PM loss is much severer in PMVMs. Finally, a prototype of PMVM is tested and the experimental results have a good agreement with the FEA and theoretical analysis.
