Abstract

In this paper, a new coplanar waveguide (CPW) bandpass filter using left-handed metamaterial (LHM) is proposed. It is composed of series gaps and split ring resonators (SRRs) etched on the center strip conductor and a thin wire (TW) embed in the silicon substrate. The total area of the bandpass filter is only 15.5 mm×9 mm. Equivalent circuit model of the filter is obtained and the circuit simulation results show almost good agreement with the electromagnetic (EM) simulation results. Simulation results show that the return loss is less than -10 dB from 14.8 GHz to 20.1 GHz and the insertion loss is better than -2 dB from 16 GHz to 20 GHz. The filter has a relative 3-dB bandwidth of 30% with good out-of-band suppressed.
