Abstract

The rolling and slipping contact between the drum test machine and the tire is studied and the effect of the test machine radius on the characteristics of contact surface is analysed by using the improved variable restraint method and the three-dimensional nonlinear finite element analysis software for tires only. The results show that the drum radius has significant effect on the positive and tangential stresses and area of the tire touching ground. The ground touching positive stress becomes well distributed. The vertical load and the ground touching area increase as long as the drum radius increases. The larger the drum radius is, the better the simulation of flat road surface. When the drum radius is more than 1 meter, the effect of radius on the characteristics of contact surface between tire and drum gradually decreases.
