Abstract

The conventional five-level inverters need more power switches. While the topology of a five-level inverter with only five switches is simpler. The principle of the simple one is analysed first, then the SPWM control idea based on carriers is presented, so the carriers-staggered SPWM control method based on a five-switch five-level inverter and the implementing method by FPGA are obtained. The carriers are staggered periodically with the modulation signal, and the modulation signal is divided as layers and divisions with the sinusoidal PWM manner, at the same time. The corresponding switching control signals are obtained. The simulation results indicate that the switch loss is less, and the characteristic of harmonics is the same to cascaded H-bridge. In addition, the experimental results prove that CS-SPWM control method is applicable during the whole modulation range. Both of the simulation and experimental results verified the feasibility and validity of the carriers-staggered SPMW control method based on a five-switched five-level inverter.
