Butyric production and metabolic kinetics of a novel cellulose degrading strain

Abstract

A novel anaerobic strain, which could digest cellulose during butyric acid production, was isolated from an enrichment culture of cow dung, pig manure, corn soil and rotten wood. The strain was a bacillus with a length of 7.1~9.1 μm and a diameter of about 1.2 μm. It belonged to Clostridium butyricum and named C. Butyricum DCB. Strain DCB had a specific growth rate of 0.6536 h-1 in cellobiose medium at 35℃. In addition to this, the generation time, degradation rate and butyric acid production rate of Strain DCB were 1.06 h, 0.1 g/(L·h) and 0.06 g/(L·h), respectively. In cellulose medium at 35℃, the highest butyric acid convertion ratio was 0.23 g/g.
