Abstract

The sudden failure mechanism and the lack of an appropriate method to provide life cycle information limit the use of fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites in civil infrastructures. This paper presents the use of built-in optical fiber sensors concept for life cycle monitoring purpose of FRP-based civil infrastructures. Optical fiber-based sensors (OFs) are integrated into FRP material to produce OF-based intelligent components and systems. The paper presents the latest progress on the built-in OFs FRPbased components and systems with self-sensing function to detect any changes occurring in the concerned structures. Finally, case studies of the application of the smart components are given. The OFs-based built-in method reduces the difficulties for sensors installation and improve the local and global damage detection with high accuracy throughout the lifespan of the structure.
