Abstract

The effects of the pointing error and background light in the lunar-earth laser link on the BER are analyzed by using Webb-Gaussian model of APD (avalanche photodiode) and are also simulated with computer. The result indicates that the pointing error must be controlled within 15 μrad and the number of photons per slot of PPM (pulse position modulation) symbol must be controlled below 20 in order to achieve 1 × 10-6 BER. At the same time, the optimization of the APD's gain can decrease the BER of the lunar-earth laser link.
