Abstract
Microalgae have great potential for both total nitrogen/phosphorus (TN/TP) removal and Cu(II) biosorption. The objective of this study was to optimize the biofilm production and TN/TP/Cu(II) removal with attached culture of Chlamydomonas sp. JSC4 in swine wastewater using an innovative fixed-bed biofilm reactor (FBR). The influences of medium volume, N/P ratios and Cu(II) concentration were investigated. The maximum biofilm productivity of 49.70 g m−2 d−1 was obtained with 300 mL original wastewater (TN: 600 mg L−1; N/P ratio: 23:1; Cu(II): 0.23 mg L−1), which was 1.875 L wastewaer for 1 m2 of cultivation surface. Although the passive adsorption of Cu(II) greatly inhibited the adsorption of TN/TP, detoxification associated with active metabolism was conducive to promoting the removal of TN/TP. A high Cu(II) concentration of 15 mg L−1 was tolerated, under which, the biofilm productivity of 37.73 g m−2 d−1, Cu(II) removal capacity of 3.10 mg g−1 and TN/TP/ Cu(II) removal efficiency of 85.79%/96.56%93.70% were achieved, respectively.
