Abstract

The simulation of the atomic oxygen exposure on BHM3 high-modulus carbon fibers and carbon fiber/cyanate ester (CF/CE) composites is conducted by use of the ground simulator. The atomic oxygen erosion of carbon fiber and CF/CE composites is investigated by adopting the SEM, XRD and XPS technologies. The results show that the mass loss ratios of carbon fiber and CF/CE composites are both lower than 1% when exposed to a nominal AO fluence of 1×1021 atoms/cm2, and the interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) of CF/CE composites decreases by 16%.
