Abstract
An open Λ-type three-level atom in a photonic crystal can become nearly transparent to a resonant probe field even if the density of modes (DOM) has no mathematical singularity. A high-Q defect mode can induce perfect coherent population trapping. The role of singularity/smoothness of DOM is analyzed.
