Abstract

The extremely harsh environment of the Arctic regions and the small and monotonous architectural environment of the Arctic research stations make the team members suffer from psychological symptoms such as “wintering syndrome” and “three-quarter phenomenon.” In addition to its scientific research function, the Arctic research stations should also pay attention to the mental health and needs of the people who work and live there. Therefore, it is necessary to explore how to design the architectural environment of Arctic research stations to restore their psychological health from the perspective of restorative environment theory. Through in-depth interviews with the team members, this paper analyzes the psychological state and behavioral characteristics of the team members and summarizes the spatial design elements that have a restorative effect on the researchers. Finally, architectural design strategies for restoring psychological health are proposed in relation to the needs of the team members to inform the construction, planning, and design of future Arctic research stations.
