Abstract

Gamma titanium aluminides (TiAl alloys) are emerging as a most promising high temperature structural materials alternative in the field of aerospace and automotive industries due to the low density , good oxidation , burn resistance and outstanding mechanical properties up to 800°C. Application of ceramic moulds for investment casting of near net shape cast parts made of TiAl alloys would be highly effective. In the present work , applicability of zirconia ceramic moulds for investment casting of TiAl alloys was investigated. The main factors controlling the qualities of zirconia ceramic moulds were identified. The interfacial reactions between TiAl alloys and zirconia in investment casting were examined. The re- suits show that TiAl components were less contamination and low oxygen concentration. The feasibility of zirconia ceramic moulds for investment casting of TiAl alloys was verified successfully through model components including engine blade. Some basic issues of process control and quality inspection for investment casting of TiAl alloys will also be discussed.
