Application of the Weibull function on processing traffic flow data

Abstract

Headway and speed distribution models were set up for traffic flow about on-ramp junctions of urban expressway, which was based on the analysis of subsistent distribution models and Weibull distribution function. Additionally, the graphic method and analytic method of calibrating the parameters were discussed. It was found that the graphic method could be used to calibrate a two-parameter speed Weibull distribution model and the analytic method for three-parameter Weibull distribution model of vehicles' headway directly. Finally, the models were validated with collected on-ramp junction traffic flow data in the GUANGZHOU urban expressway, and the results showed that Weibull distribution functions can describe traffic flow distribution regularity suitably, especially for the use of traffic flow with high density much better than Erlang distribution and Normal distribution.
