N2 - Since the Vocational Qualification System for Registered Structural Engineer (VQS-RSE) in China was implemented in 1997, the management level of structural engineering design staff and engineering design quality have been improved significantly. However, many problems still exist in its implementation process. Firstly, the current status of Chinese VQS-RSE is presented by literature review and inquiring governmental officials. Then, through expert interviews, critical problems facing Chinese VQS-RSE is analyzed. Finally, suggestions on perfecting Chinese VQS-RSE are provided based on the summary of experts' viewpoints. We hope this study can arouse the attention of international experienced professionals to the problems of Chinese VQS-RSE and that they might give more effective and efficient solutions to these problems. The results of this paper also have significant implications for other developing countries' establishment or reform of VQS-RSE.
