Abstract

The prediction of radiative base heating due to rocket plumes was analyzed using a backward monte carlo code based on the radiation distribution factor. The source of base heating was divided into searchlight emission and plume emission. Predictions for an absorbing, emitting, and scattering plume with nonuniform temperature field were also presented. It was found that the radiative heat flux induced by plume emission increased as the optical radius increased from 0.5 to 10.0.
