Abstract
Filiform wear products, with the appearance of silk wadding, were found by scanning electron microscopy observations of worn surfaces of 52100 steel after dry sliding. Transmission electron microscopy examinations show that such products have an amorphous structure. It is considered that the filiform wear products can be formed when the molten asperities of wearing surface come into contact and then move away from each other, followed by rapid cooling.
