An Improved MRC-Rake Symbol Detector for OTFS Modulation Using Expectation Cancellation

Abstract

MRC-Rake detector has shown a great advantage in the low-complexity OTFS symbol detection over the probability graph based detectors, like message passing and expectation propagation (EP) detectors. However, these probabilistic detectors provide us an idea of soft-interference cancellation to incrementally improve the MRC-Rake detector. In this paper, it is first proposed to use the modulation symbol expectation cancellation to mitigate the error propagations during interference cancellations in the MRC-Rake detector. We calculate the symbol expectation using the estimated log-likelihood ratios (LLRs) of information bits. To calculate the LLRs, a simple approach to estimate the equalized symbol gain and variance is also presented. Numerical results show that the proposed incremental improvement achieves faster convergence and better error rate over the original MRC-Rake detector and EP detector, especially when high-order QAMs are adopted.
