Abstract

A new optimal technique, called coupled local minimizers (CLM) was proposed for solve optimization problem recently. CLM algorithm is demonstrated to be an effective global optimization method with coupled parallel strategy and the fast convergence. However, for optimal problem with large dimension such as model updating of real complex structures, which is usually rendered as an optimization problem, the effectiveness of CLM has not been validated. In this paper the CLM method is introduced, and problems with CLM that may result in its inability for large dimension optimization problem are pointed out. The CLM method is then improved in three aspects, i.e., adaptive search steps, chaos orbits for initial population generating, multidirectional network. Significant improvements of CLM are demonstrated. Lastly the improved CLM is employed to update a 14-bay frame model.
