Abstract
Membrane bioreactor (MBR) is a robust technology in biological wastewater treatment field, which has been applied in treating municipal as well as industrial wastewaters. Given its distinct advantages such as high treatment efficiency, small footprint, simper operation as well as high-quality solid-free effluent, MBR is well recognized as a promising alternative to the conventional activated sludge (CAS) process. This chapter comprehensively reviews the aerobic MBR applications in major high-strength industrial wastewater treatment. The treatment performances, membrane-fouling control strategies, hybrid MBR systems for enhanced treatment performance, membrane material development as well as MBR life-cycle and mark assessments are discussed.
