Abstract

The performance of combined BAF-MBR processes in treating the municipal wastewater of a town in southern China was investigated. The experimental results demonstrated that the processes were able to remove most pollutants from the wastewater. The average concentrations of COD, NH4+-N, TN, and TP in the final effluent were 7.11, 0.16, 8.85, and 0.34 mg·L-1, respectively, meeting the requirements for effluent reuse. When simultaneous chemical removal of phosphorus for the BAF effluent was performed in the subsequent MBR, with a FeSO4·7H2O dosage of 20 mg·L-1, the effluent TP concentration was 0.34 mg·L-1, while the membrane fouling was aggravated to some extent. However, when 30 mg·L-1 of Al2(SO4)3·18H2O was used instead of FeSO4·7H2O, the effluent TP concentration was 0.33 mg·L-1, and membrane fouling could be effectively alleviated.
