Abstract

The sensing properties of SMA wire in austenitic phase were experimentally studied and the change in the electric resistance with the strain or stress was obtained through the test. That the relationship of the fracture of electric resistance and stress or strain of SMA is significantly influenced by SMA deformation was found. The results indicated that it is feasible to develop self-sensing structural systems with embedded SMA wires. The emergent crack repair of a RC beam with embedded SMA bars was analyzed by using the finite element model utilizing SMA restrained recovery properties. The results indicated that SMA bars could efficiently close them when the width of crack was small, however, the SMA bars could modify the stress around the crack when the width of crack was large. That the SMA bars could efficiently reduce the damage level was demonstrated in this study.
