title = "Adsorption of ammonium to biologically aerated filter backwashed sludge",
abstract = "Ammonium adsorption characteristics of the denitrifying filter and the biologically aerated filter backwashed sludge and influence factors such as sludge concentration, sludge activity and effect of chemical coagulants were investigated. Ammonium was found to be adsorbed to both kinds of backwashed sludge. The backwashed sludge in biologically aerated filter adsorbed more ammonium than that in denitrifying filter in the same concentration of the sludge. The adsorbed amount of ammonium is increased along with the increment of backwashed sludge concentration, and the adsorbed amount of ammonium reach 1.03mg/L to 4.35mg/L in denitrifying filter and 1.95mg/L to 6.21mg/L in BAF filter when the sludge concentration is increased from 500mg/L to 3000mg/L. Adsorption performance of sterilized sludge and original sludge is similar. The impact of chemical coagulants on the adsorption capacity of backwashed sludge was studied both in denitrifying filter and biologically aerated filter.",
