Abstract
Fly ash (FA) has been tested as a low-cost adsorbent of humic acid (HA) in this study. Effects of FA dosages, pH, contact time and temperature on the selectivity and sensitivity of the adsorption were investigated. The optimum conditions for HA removing were FA dosage of 10 g/L, temperature of 313 K and pH 3, respectively. Up to a 87.7% reduction of HA could be achieved in 15 min under the acidic condition (pH 3). Contrarily, the removal efficiency of HA ranged 27-35% under the neutral and alkaline conditions, and reached equilibrium slowly (120 min). Adsorption of HA onto FA followed a pseudo-second-order kinetics at pH 7, and also showed endothermic adsorption nature. Chemical characteristic of the HA before and after the FA adsorption was discussed.
