Abstract

Numerical simulation of squeeze casting A356 aluminum alloy component was performed by the ProCAST software. The results show that solidification of component started from the contact surface between aluminum melt and die. The final solidification location is located at the center of corner of wheel model. Solidification time is increased with an increase of pouring temperature and die temperature, however it is decreased with an increase of specific pressure. Maximum effective stress occurrs in the corner of component, while the central region has the minimum effective stress. With the increase of pouring temperature or die temperature, maximum effective stress is decreased. The optimized process parameters were presented such as pouring temperature of 680~720℃, die temperature of 200~300℃ and specific pressure of more than 200 MPa by numerical simulation. The results of the validation experiment show that A356 aluminum alloy components with desirable surface quality, complete filling and absence of defects can be produced successfully via squeeze casting under the optimized process parameters.
