A TEM horn antenna with lens and tapered ridges for UWB radar application

Abstract

The paper presents a TEM double-ridged horn antenna with two laterally and longitudinally tapered ridges and a dielectric lens located at the antenna aperture. By tapering the ridges of a TEM horn antenna, a satisfied gain is got, the size of horn antenna is decreased, and the bandwidth is better for the practical operation. Meanwhile, the dielectric lens can increase the gains of antenna at high frequencies and narrow the main lobe, thus realize a better radiation pattern. Simulation results for the VSWR, radiation pattern, and the gain of the horn antenna are presented; the influence of both the lens and tapered ridges on the antenna properties is discussed as well. This paper introduces the results of the design, and realization and measurement of a TEM double-ridged horn antenna with a frequency band of 1-21GHz.
