Abstract

In this paper, we present a novel small infrared (IR) target detection method to enhance the performance of IR guiding and tracking (IRGT) systems. To guarantee the effectiveness of the local contrast measurement mechanism (LCM) under the occasions with complex background, the relationship between the size of the window and the LCM value of the background pixel is analyzed in detail. Thus, two critical laws about determining the size of the window are drawn. In addition, the adaptive local measurement contrast (ALCM) is developed to weaken the background noises by comparing the maximum LCM value and that of an adaptive window. The proposed method is evaluated by a series of experiments with a data set of real IR images. The experimental results illustrate that it can maintain a good balance between the detection rate and the false positive detection rate.
