Abstract

Fabric-based pneumatic exosuits have a broad application prospect due to their good human-machine interaction performance, and their structural design paradigm requires more in-depth research. This paper presents a series-parallel cylindrical airbag exosuit (SPCE) for knee extension assistance. Series connection of multiple cylindrical airbags can reduce the consumption of compressed air, while parallel connection can increase the stress area and improve comfort. The SPCE is made of common clothing fabrics, which are light, soft and cost-effective. An analytical mathematical model is developed for predicting the output torque of the SPCE with an error of 3.6%. Mechanical experiments show that the output torque of SPCE is 9.1Nm at 100kPa air pressure. Knee extension assist experiments are performed and the surface electromyography signals of the relevant muscles are reduced by 23.2%. The SPCE promises to be widely used in lower extremity rehabilitation.
