Abstract

Additive manufacturing (AM), also known as 3D printing,has been used for rapid prototyping due to its ability toproduce parts with complex geometries from computeraided design files. Currently, polymers and metals are themost commonly used materials for AM. However, ceramicmaterials have unique mechanical properties such asstrength, corrosion resistance, and temperature resistance.This paper provides a review of recent AM techniques forceramics such as extrusion-based AM, the mechanicalproperties of additively manufactured ceramics, and theapplications of ceramics in various industries, includingaerospace, automotive, energy, electronics, and medical. Adetailed overview of binder-jetting, laser-assistedprocesses, laminated object manufacturing (LOM), andmaterial extrusion-based 3D printing is presented. Finally,the challenges and opportunities in AM of ceramics areidentified.
