Abstract

This paper proposes a new relative viscosity hypothesis. Analogy relationship between traffic flow and fluid flow is adjusted. Based on continuum equation set up, viscosity momentum differential equation is derived. The concepts of relative traffic pressure saturation (RPS) are introduced to evaluating level of service (LOS) for urban freeway. The feasibility of evaluating service level of highway by non-dimensional traffic pressure is analyzed and a large amount of field data collected by using traffic detectors on urban freeways in China are used to verify the hypothesis proposed in this paper. It is concluded that the observed data show that non-dimensional traffic pressure could be used to evaluate LOS.
