A compact wideband planar inverted-F antenna (PIFA) loaded with metamaterial

Abstract

This paper proposes a novel planar inverted-F antenna (PIFA) with metamaterial loaded on the ground plane. The metamaterial is composed of an array of Jerusalem cross-shaped PEC structure. Simulation results show that this novel antenna has a bandwidth of 49.4%, which is from 2.56GHz to 4.24GHz. Compared to conventional PIFA, the proposed antenna reduces 91% in size. And the gain reaches more than 3dB over the whole bandwidth. The proposed antenna has a characteristic of backward radiation in the bandwidth.
