Abstract
The rapid emergence of ride-hailing services has introduced a significant shift in urban mobility, challenging conventional transportation paradigms and raising critical questions about interactions with urban functional zones. This chapter explores whether ride-hailing replicates general road automobile travel dynamics or embodies a distinct mobility mode requiring new urban planning frameworks by utilizing point-of-interests, mobile phone trajectories, and ride-hailing orders. We analyze unique interactions between ride-hailing and urban functional zones, finding significant differences compared to general road automobile travel. Proximity to shopping centers, airports, and metro stations negatively correlates with ride-hailing usage, contrasting with positive correlations for road automobile travel. These findings underscore the need for tailored urban planning to support evolving platform-based mobility systems.
