Abstract

This paper presents the design of a 24 GHz microstrip grid array antenna excited by capacitive coupling slot on Rogers 5880 substrate. The dimension of the antenna is 70mmx70mmx0.787mm. The capacitive coupling slot of 15mmx0.3mm is located in the middle of the ground plane. Simulation results in Ansoft HFSS indicate that its 10 dB impedance bandwidth is 2.95 GHz from 22 GHz to 24.95 GHz, the maximal peak realized gain is 18 dBi at 24.4 GHz and 3 dB gain bandwidth is 2.15 GHz from 23.03 GHz to 25.18 GHz with broadside radiation patterns at 24 GHz. This work demonstrates that slot excitation is an effective excitation method for microstrip grid array antennas.
