Abstract

In this paper, based on the modular type of maneuvering model (MMG model), two kinds of wave drift loads, namely slow varying wave drift loads and mean wave drift loads, are taken into account to model wave effects on ship turning motion. Numerical tests of a S-175 container ship demonstrate that the mathematical model with mean drift loads accounted is accurate enough for predicting the ship turning motion in irregular waves. Based on the proposed mathematical model, systematic analysis on the ship turning maneuvers in long and short crested irregular waves is performed. Variation of the ship turning performance with characteristic parameters such as wave height and characteristic wave period of irregular waves is revealed. Comparison of turning maneuvering between in long crested irregular waves and in short crested irregular waves is carried out.
