Abstract
This paper summarizes the latest research progress according to the aspects of design, fabrication and mechanical properties of lightweight composite sandwich structures. Then, it introduces the topological design and fabrication methods of three typical sandwich structures, including composite lattice sandwich structure, foldcore sandwich structure, and honeycomb sandwich structure. For the latest research progress on property improvement this review mainly summarizes the work about theoretical prediction and experimental characterization of mechanical properties as well as failure mode analysis. Based on the latest research progress on lightweight composite sandwich structures, the development trend and possible applications of the lattice sandwich structure, foldcore sandwich structure and honeycomb sandwich structure are suggested as well.
