Abstract

Some loads with small torque and small inertia on aerospace equipment such as observation equipment, generally work within a limited angle range. Outside the working area, a separate auxiliary locking mechanism is required to lock it to avoid affecting other devices. The schemes proposed in the existing literature are all physical contact schemes with complex structure and poor stability. In this paper, a contactless locking mechanism is proposed, two designs of electromagnetic and permanent magnetic scheme are proposed according to their different excitation sources. The mathematical expressions of the torque characteristics for both of the designs are derived and unified in the analytical way, which have visually revealed the relationship between the performance and the structure parameters. The key performance parameters of the two schemes, including critical angle, peak torque and energy density, are further compared using three-dimensional finite element numerical method. The theoretical results are finally verified by experiments on a permanent magnet prototype, which proves that the design is reasonable in practical engineering.
