Abstract

Multiple aftershocks are generally triggered by a strong earthquake. Influences of the mainshock-aftershock sequences including multiple aftershocks on structural performance were investigated. A reinforced concrete frame structure was selected as the target building. A total of 112 earthquake sequences, each of which including 3 aftershocks, were selected as earthquake inputs. The cumulative structural damages due to mainshock-aftershock sequences were obtained in terms of maximum interstory drift angle, maximum top displacement ratio and the modified Park-Ang damage index. The obtained accumulative damages of structures were further compared with those subjected to the mainshock-aftershock sequences considering the single aftershock with the largest peak ground acceleration. Through the comparison, it is indicated that the strongest aftershock plays a dominant role in the structural damages due to mainshock-aftershock sequences, since no significantly additional damages are caused by the multiple aftershocks.
