Abstract

In light of the continuous emergence and accumulation of persistent and refractory emerging organic contaminants in water, it is imperative to develop green, low-carbon, and efficient adsorption technologies for controlling water pollution. The main bottleneck faced by conventional adsorption materials is their desorption-regeneration and cyclic utilization, which increases application costs and environmental pressures, thereby hampering their further development. Thermally responsive materials (TRMs) present a promising solution, as they are intelligent materials capable of undergoing reversible and controllable phase transformations in response to ambient temperature changes. However, there have been limited reports on the use of TRMs as adsorption materials for water treatment. This article aims to address this knowledge gap by exploring the current status of TRMs in intelligent adsorption technologies for water pollution control. We explain the temperature-sensitive structural change mechanisms of TRMs and their effects on pollutant adsorption and desorption. We review the high-efficiency applications of TRMs and their composites as adsorbents in water treatment. Furthermore, we discuss green regeneration strategies of intelligent thermally responsive adsorption materials. We also look forward to future research directions and practical applications of TRMs. This article provides new insights for synergizing pollution reduction and carbon reduction in ecological environmental management.
