Abstract
The filling process of large-size hollow thin-walled Mg-6Gd-3Y-0.5Zr alloy castings was analyzed, and the FLOW-3D software was applied with combination of the method of free surface simulation tracking. The influence of abrupt changes in the cross section and the convergence of the front of the liquid flow on the stability of the liquid surface rise was investigated, and the formation mechanism of the surface film defects was also described. Finally, some improvements of the gating system were presented.
